Looking up Kanji by Grade

The Kyouiku Kanji or "Education Characters" are those characters learned in the first 6 grades of Japans school system. The exact number and break-down of these characters seems to vary. Shougakukan's 5th grader's Kanji Dictionary and Daiichi Gakushuusha's Comprehensive Kanji Learner are both productions of native Japanese publishers and both list the total number of Kyouiku Kanji as 996 with the break down as follows: 76 in the first grade, 145 in the second grade, 195 in the third grade, 195 in the fourth grade, 195 in the fifth grade and 190 in the sixth grade.
However, Nelson's Japanese-English Character Dictionary and P.G. O'Neill's Essential Kanji (both written and published outside Japan) list the total number of Kyouiku Kanji as 881 with 46 in the first grade, 105 in the second grade, 187 in the third grade, 205 in the fourth grade, 194 in the fifth grade, and 144 in the sixth grade. This dictionary lists kanji by grade according to the Japanese publications with a total of 996 Kyouiku Kanji.
